With regard to choosing subjects at university, there are currently two opposing schools of thought. One argues that students should opt for learning various additional subjects, while the other maintains that a fixed concentration on learning to achieve a qualification would yield the best result. From my perspective, a combination between both approaches would optimize educational benefits for a learner. 

To begin with, studying multiple subjects at university allows students to broaden their knowledge on different aspects of life. Pupils are able to hone their interdisciplinary and critical thinking skills - the two most important traits for a 21st-century citizen. By weaving knowledge from different disciplines, people can figure out multi-faceted solutions for a problem. For example, there have been numerous studies where researchers applied an interdisciplinary approach to provide holistic observations on a specific phenomenon. Furthermore, engaging with subjects outside one's major can significantly contribute to their personal growth and development. Exposure to diverse perspectives and methodologies challenges preconceived notions, provoking thought processes and fostering intellectual curiosity, all to foster a life-long learning path. These advantages of a comprehensive education would lay the groundwork for future success both personally and professionally.

On the other hand, concentrating on achieving a qualification allows space for boosting in-depth understanding and knowledge of a field. Students who possess an impressive expertise in an area of study are likely to perform beyond expectation in their chosen major. In the long run, such profound and thorough grasp would be invaluable if they were to pursue higher education. Besides academic benefits, a person who knows a particular subject area well is often equipped with the competence to tackle complex challenges and make informed decisions in their respective industries. Consequently, he or she stands a higher chance of climbing the career path more quickly. Therefore, extensive research into a specialized field of study may act as a powerful catalyst for professional growth.

In conclusion, it is a matter of fact that learning to master a qualification indeed ensures one’s competence in their chosen profession, as well as crystallizes and consolidates the specific knowledge. However, in order to obtain an all-encompassing personal development, one should also bear in mind the importance of other additional subjects, since they offer a broader perspective, cultivate critical thinking, and enhance problem-solving skills.
