Dạng bài viết Advantages and Disadvantages là một trong những loại câu hỏi phổ biến, yêu cầu người viết phân tích cả hai mặt tích cực và tiêu cực của một vấn đề, tình huống hoặc xu hướng nào đó. Thí sinh cần thể hiện khả năng đánh giá, so sánh và đưa ra lập luận cân nhắc giữa các yếu tố tích cực và tiêu cực liên quan đến chủ đề. 

 

Phân loại các dạng Advantages and Disadvantages

+ Dạng 1: Chỉ nêu Advantages - Disadvantages, không yêu cầu thí sinh bày tỏ quan điểm.

Dạng này thí sinh chỉ cần đề cập đến các khía cạnh tích cực và tiêu cực của một quan điểm, tình huống hoặc vấn đề, không yêu cầu phải bảo vệ một mặt hoặc thể hiện ý kiến cá nhân. Cấu trúc bài viết cũng rất ngắn gọn và đơn giản: mở bài một đoạn, thân bài chia làm hai đoạn nhỏ nói về mặt tích cực và tiêu cực, và cuối cùng một đoạn kết bài.

Ví dụ đề bài: Many elderly people are no longer looking after by their families but are put in care homes. Discuss about/ What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?

 

+ Dạng 2: Nêu Advantages - Disadvantages, có yêu cầu thí sinh bày tỏ quan điểm.

Dạng này không chỉ yêu cầu thí sinh đưa ra khía cạnh tích cực và tiêu cực, mà còn cần làm rõ khía nào có ưu thế hơn, hoặc bày tỏ quan điểm cá nhân. Xác định mặt nào chiếm ưu thế hơn phải được khẳng định trong câu chủ đề và nêu rõ lý do trong xuyên suốt bài viết. Khi yêu cầu bày tỏ quan điểm, bài viết sẽ bao gồm các đoạn thể hiện các mặt tốt, mặt xấu và một đoạn thể hiện ý kiến cá nhân.

Ví dụ đề bài: 

•  It is becoming more popular to have a year off between graduating university and going to work. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Cấu trúc viết bài IELTS Writing Task 2 - Advantages and Disadvantages

 1. Mở bài (Introduction)

Phần mở đầu sẽ giới thiệu chủ đề của bài viết và đề bài một cách ngắn gọn, rõ ràng. Trong phần này, bạn hãy nêu quan điểm riêng của mình nếu được yêu cầu. Nếu đề bài không yêu cầu, bạn chỉ cần mô tả đề bài.

+ General Statement: giới thiệu vấn đề, quan điểm, tình huống bằng cách paraphrase đề bài.

+ Thesis statement: khái quát chung về hai mặt tốt và xấu của vấn đề/ tình huống. Nếu đề bài hỏi ưu điểm hay nhược điểm trội hơn, hãy đưa luôn quan điểm cá nhân ở phần này hoặc ý kiến cá nhân ( nếu có yêu cầu ).

Với phần này, chúng ta có thể sử dụng các mẫu câu như sau:

2. Thân bài 1 (Main body paragraph 1)

Đoạn thân bài đầu tiên sẽ trình bày một khía cạnh của chủ đề một cách riêng biệt, các bạn cần tập trung vào khía cạnh ưu điểm hoặc nhược điểm của tình huống và cung cấp bằng chứng hỗ trợ cũng như ví dụ minh họa cụ thể.

+ Topic sentence - advantage/disadvantage: câu chủ đề đưa ra ưu điểm hoặc nhược điểm của vấn đề. Nếu đề bài yêu cầu mặt nào vượt trội hơn thì đoạn này sẽ nói về mặt chiếm ưu thế ít hơn.

+ Supporting idea 1/ Explanation: đưa ra lập luận để làm sáng tỏ ưu điểm/ nhược điểm của vấn đề, hỗ trợ cho câu chủ đề.

+ Example: ví dụ minh họa.

+ Consequence: đưa ra những kết quả (nếu cần) để bài viết thêm thuyết phục.

Đoạn thân bài thứ hai sẽ trình bày khía cạnh còn lại của vấn đề, tùy vào trường hợp các bạn có thể viết mặt tích cực trước tiêu cực hoặc ngược lại nhưng nên chú ý đoạn này nên ưu tiên những khía cạnh có nhiều ý hơn và chiếm ưu thế lớn hơn. 

+ Topic sentence - state 2 advantage/disadvantage: câu chủ đề đưa ra mặt còn lại của vấn đề, nghiêng về mặt chiếm ưu thế lớn hơn (nếu có yêu cầu).

+ Supporting idea 2/ Explanation: đưa ra lập luận để làm sáng tỏ ưu điểm/ nhược điểm của vấn đề, hỗ trợ cho câu chủ đề.

+ Example: ví dụ minh họa.

+ Consequence: đưa ra những kết quả (nếu cần) để bài viết thêm thuyết phục.

4. Kết bài (Conclusion)

Phần kết bài sẽ tóm tắt các điểm chính đã trình bày trong thân bài, sau đó rút ra kết luận tổng quan về chủ đề hoặc đưa ra ý kiến cá nhân (nếu yêu cầu).

+ Summarise the key points: Tóm tắt lại vấn đề đã được trình bày.

+ State your opinion (if required): Đưa ra kết luận và trình bày quan điểm của bạn (nếu cần).

Bước 1: Xác định yêu cầu của đề bài

Đây là yêu cầu quan trọng đối với mọi dạng bài trong phần thi IELTS Writing. Các bạn cần đọc kỹ đề bài và xác định chủ đề của bài, dạng bài advantages and disadvantages này có những yêu cầu gì, có yêu cầu bày tỏ ý kiến hay không?

 

Ví dụ đề bài: In many countries, children are engaged in some kind of paid work. Some people regard this as completely wrong, while others consider it as valuable work experience, important for learning and taking responsibility. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

 

Cần chú ý trong đề bài có thể sẽ thay thế các từ “ advantages”, “disadvantages” thành “benefits”, “drawbacks” hoặc chỉ nói gọn là “these views” như ở đề bài trên. Dạng bài trên là dạng 2, nêu rõ advantages and disadvantages và bày tỏ quan điểm cá nhân. 

 

Bước 2: Lập dàn ý khái quát và tổng hợp từ vựng chủ chốt

Sau khi đã xác định được yêu cầu của đề bài, chúng ta cần chọn lọc những điểm nổi bật nhất của hai mặt vấn đề mà có thể dẫn dắt được nhiều dẫn chứng và dễ đưa ra những ví dụ nhất.

 

Advantages:

• Work Experience: Children can gain valuable work experience at an early age, learning important skills such as time management, communication, and teamwork, which prepares them better for the future when entering the workforce.
• Financial Independence: Earning their own money can instill a sense of responsibility and financial independence, helping them understand the value of hard work and how to manage their earnings. 
• Self-Evaluation: Engaging in paid work allows children to evaluate the value of labor and comprehend the efforts they put into earning money, helping them appreciate the worth of money and work. 

Disadvantages:

• Impact on Education: Children involved in paid work may suffer negative impacts on their physical and mental well-being. Heavy workloads can lead to physical exhaustion and leave less time for rest and academic activities, potentially affecting their academic performance.
• Reversal of Roles: Work experience may lead to a reversal of roles for children, subjecting them to adult responsibilities and pressures. This can cause psychological stress and hinder their natural development. 
• Vulnerability to Exploitation: Children engaged in unsuitable tasks may be vulnerable to exploitation, disregarding their rights and well-being.

Personal Opinion:

• In my opinion, finding a balance is essential. While paid work can offer valuable experiences and teach responsibility, it is vital to consider age-appropriate tasks and ensure that children are not overwhelmed with excessive workloads. By regulating and supervising children's paid work, we can create opportunities for learning and personal growth while safeguarding their well-being and educational pursuits. 

 

Bước 3: Viết phần Mở bài - Introduction

Công việc đầu tiên cần thực hiện là paraphrase lại câu hỏi:

+ Questions: In many countries, children are engaged in some kind of paid work. Some people regard this as completely wrong, while others consider it as valuable work experience, important for learning and taking responsibility. 

+ Paraphrased question: Many people believe paid work offers children numerous benefits related to valuable work experience, responsibility taking. While others strongly oppose this practice. 

Kết hợp với dàn ý phía trên, bạn đã có thể trình bày ngắn gọn chủ đề của đề tài và vì có yêu cầu nên quan điểm cá nhân, đừng quên giới thiệu một câu trong phần giới thiệu nhé.

Bước 4: Viết phần Thân bài - Body paragraph 1

Đoạn đầu tiên sẽ trình bày về khía cạnh tích cực của vấn đề. Cấu trúc đoạn bao gồm câu chủ đề, luận điểm giải thích và ví dụ minh họa hoặc kết quả của quan điểm.

 

Ví dụ phần thân bài:

Engaging in paid work at an early age can be highly beneficial as it provides children with valuable work experience. Through this hands-on experience, children can learn essential skills that will serve them well in their future endeavors. One of the crucial skills gained from such experiences is time management, as they learn to balance their work responsibilities with other aspects of their lives. For example, a teenager working part-time at a retail store will learn how to handle customer interactions and manage their work schedule effectively.  Additionally, being part of a workforce exposes them to teamwork, where they collaborate with others to achieve common goals. These experiences not only contribute to their personal development but also lay a strong foundation for their future careers.

 

Bước 5: Viết phần Thân bài - Body paragraph 2

Đoạn thứ hai sẽ viết về khía cạnh còn lại của vấn đề. Cấu trúc đoạn thứ hai cũng tương tự như đoạn đầu tiên sẽ bao gồm câu chủ đề, luận điểm giải thích và ví dụ minh họa hoặc kết quả của quan điểm.

 

Ví dụ phần thân bài:

However, it is clear that engaging in paid work at an early age has its own downsides. Children involved in paid work may suffer negative impacts on their physical and mental well-being. As young individuals devote time to their work commitments, they may find it challenging to allocate sufficient time for their studies. The demanding schedule could lead to decreased focus on academic responsibilities, resulting in lower grades and compromised academic performance. Moreover, the burden of work responsibilities may exhaust them physically and mentally, leaving them with little energy and motivation to excel in their studies. Bước 6: Viết phần Thân bài - Body paragraph 3

Đoạn thứ ba này bạn sẽ nêu ý kiến cá nhân của bạn. Bạn có thể bày tỏ quan điểm đồng tình hay không đồng tình với vấn đề và giải thích ý kiến của mình dựa trên những khía cạnh tích cực hoặc tiêu cực của nó. Để thêm tính thuyết phục, bạn có thể đưa ra thêm ví dụ hoặc những kết quả/ hậu quả mà bạn đã biết.

Bước 7: Viết phần Kết bài - Conclusion

Đoạn này bạn sẽ tóm tắt các luận điểm chính trong bài của bạn với các ý mà bạn đã nêu phía trên, không nên triển khai thêm những ý tưởng mới. Chỉ nên thêm ý tưởng mới nếu như bài viết của bạn chưa đạt đến giới hạn từ sau khi đã hoàn thành hết các bước, bạn có thể thêm sự dự đoán về tương lai hoặc đề xuất một hướng giải quyết cho yêu cầu trong bài.
