The table and pie charts below show the number of research students in Australian universities in 2001 and 2010.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The provided charts give information about the figures for local and international students going to Australian universities to participate in research fields in 2001 and 2010, along with a breakdown of research students by gender over the same period shown.
Overall, there was a significant increase in the number of both local and international research students between 2001 and 2010. It can also be seen that Australian students showed an intense interest in research, outnumbering their international counterparts; moreover, local males dominated the major in both years.
In 2001, the figure for Australian students specializing in research was approximately 34,000, which was tremendously higher than that of international students, with over 5,000. In the following 10 years, although the number of international research students saw a threefold increase to around 15,000 people, it was still far lower compared to the modest rise of local students, with about 40,000 people.
Looking at gender distribution, the percentage of male and female local students pursuing research was relatively balanced in 2001, at 44% and 43% respectively; however, the opposite was true for international students, with only 9% male and 4% female. 10 years later, there was a slightly wider gender gap among local students, with 38% male and 35% female. Likewise, a similar gap of 3% was witnessed in the proportion of international students choosing research fields. Nevertheless, a shifting trend could be seen when the proportion of females, at 15%, surpassed that of males, standing at 13% over ten years.
Task 2
Most countries aim to improve their standard of living through economic development, but many important social values can be lost as a result. Do the advantages of economic development outweigh the disadvantages?
In contemporary society, the issue of nations resorting to economic growth as the key driver of better living standards has prompted a passionate debate amongst citizens in many parts of the world. While some believe that this is an ultimate development, others contend that this could lead to a loss of numerous essential social values. This essay will delve into both the advantages and disadvantages of economic development, ultimately arguing that its detrimental impacts overshadow the benefits offered.
It is undeniable that a country’s economic growth can be seen as a part of increasing prosperity for individuals and creating a better quality of life for its citizens. As a matter of fact, not only basic needs such as food or shelter but also other luxuries like travel or entertainment could be fulfilled thanks to sufficient financial resources. Nevertheless, economic advancement also comes with adverse effects on traditional values. When people strive for financial success, they often find themselves entangled in a fast-paced race of fiercely competitive markets, sacrificing meaningful time with their family and friends. For example, over 80% of American white collar workers admitted in a public survey in 2010 that they often worked overtime and missed several precious moments with their loved ones just to seek financial security. As a result, familial bonds considered as the key traditional value are often neglected seriously.
In addition, the issue of people focusing primarily on acquiring material possessions negatively affects social values. Excessive consumerism, for instance, resulting from economic growth plays a significant role in environmental degradation. The more financial achievements are gained, the greater the consumption of goods and products. It can be easily seen in developed and developing countries, the trend of fast or disposable fashion has recently gained in popularity. Consequently, environmental resources are exploited without regard for sustainability, leading to ecological damage.
In conclusion, even though economic advancement may superficially promise enhanced living standards, there are more challenges arising from losing traditional and social values owing to this development than benefits.
