Task 1

Đề bài

The maps below show a town centre in 1990 and the same town centre today. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The two maps illustrate changes that have occurred to a town center since 1990.

Overall, there have been several transformations, especially with the appearance of shopping and residential facilities.

When it comes to the northeastern corner, to the right of Newton Street, while a row of small shops has been replaced by a large shopping mall, the childcare center next to it stays the same as its origin. Additionally, other public areas including the park, library and town hall that are opposite to the new mall remain unchanged.

Looking at the southern area, to the left of Green Street, a row of two-story houses has been removed to make room for apartment blocks. Moreover, whereas the bank in the northeast corner remains intact, another one that faces the town hall has been turned into a cafe. Besides, several pedestrian crossings have also been established to enhance walkability in the town center.

In many countries today the retirement age from work has been raised. Do the advantages of raising the retirement age outweigh the disadvantages?

In modern society, the issue of increasing the retirement age has prompted a passionate debate about its benefits and drawbacks amongst people in many parts of the world. Despite the concerns this change might raise, the advantages of raising the retirement age surpass the disadvantages.

On the one hand, when it comes to the disadvantage of this phenomenon, raising the retirement age may lead to a major concern about the potential increase in unemployment in younger generations. It is undeniable that when senior workers stay longer in their jobs, the demands for recruiting new employees may become unnecessary. As a result, newly graduated individuals can find it harder to enter the workforce and seek employment. For example, Japan in which the retirement age has been extended to 70 makes several of its young workforce decide to seek job opportunities in foreign countries instead of working for local entrepreneurs. However, this challenge could be tackled if proper measures are implemented.

The extended retirement age, on the other hand, can offer a variety of benefits. Firstly, it can be a key factor of economic relief. As a matter of fact, when life expectancy rises, the demands for pension funds and social security systems increase, which might place an intolerable burden on a nation’s economy. Therefore, governments can collect periodical tax revenues, save their budgets for other priorities and reduce the strain on the economic systems, ensuring their sustainability for future generations in the long run by extending the working age. Secondly, this policy also plays a crucial role in maintaining the experienced workforce of the society. As senior workers possess valuable experience and skills over the years, they can bring their expertise and mentorship to younger employees, which results in enhancing productivity, innovation and competence within industries.

In conclusion, there is no denying that increasing the retirement age can contribute to the potential unemployment for young generations. Nevertheless, the benefits resulting from the economic relief and competent workforce outweigh its drawbacks.
