Mù Cang Chải is a captivating place located in the northern part of Vietnam. I first came to know about this place through the breathtaking photographs that I saw on the internet. The lush, terraced rice fields that stretch across the landscape instantly captured my attention and then I decided to hit the road immediately. 

It was a bumpy track but I think it’s worth it. What particularly fascinates me about Mù Cang Chải is its stunning natural beauty and the unique agricultural practices of the local Black Hmong and Thai ethnic communities. The region is famous for its intricately terraced rice paddies, which have been cultivated for generations. These terraces cascade down the mountainsides, creating a mesmerizing picture of green during the growing season. When the rice fields are at their peak, they reflect the sunlight like a shimmering sea of green, making it a photographer's paradise.

Moreover, Mù Cang Chải offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life of the ethnic minorities which is really different from our hectic lifestyle. It's a place where I can recharge my energy and my mind by immersing myself in the nature and peaceful life of local people.

Do you travel a lot?

Quite a lot, about 7- 8 times a year. To be honest, I have an insatiable wanderlust that drives me to explore new destinations whenever I can. Traveling all around the world is on top of my bucket list.

 

Do people have different personalities in different regions of your country?

I am not an expert, but after traveling to all parts of Vietnam, I guess the variations in personality do exist. Northern residents tend to possess traits such as long-term thinking, modesty, with a touch of conservatism. In contrast, individuals from the central regions may be known for their diligence, driven by the challenging weather and environment they face. Lastly, people in the southern part of Vietnam are often characterized as warm, friendly, and open-minded, reflecting the region's vibrant and sociable atmosphere.

 

What causes the differences between different regions of your country?

During my university years, I learnt that the disparities among Vietnam’s regions stem mostly from a combination of historical events and geographic factors. Past experiences, such as wars, colonization, and cultural exchanges, have left enduring imprints on the collective distinct mindsets of each region. Additionally, geographic variances including climate, and available resources, influence the lifestyles of the local populations. 

 

Do youngsters like to try new things, or do people of your parents’ age also like to try new things?

It depends on personal preference. Typically, younger individuals usually seek out new and innovative experiences, driven by their adventurous spirit and thirst for exploration. In contrast, middle-aged and elderly individuals often gravitate towards a tranquil and uncomplicated lifestyle, cherishing a sense of stability and contentment in the familiar.
