Chủ đề: Driving a car
How interested are young people in your country in learning to drive?
I don’t believe the young adults here are exactly thrilled about the prospect of taking driving lessons. First of all, it takes a lot of money to learn and own a driving license in Vietnam. Most people have to pay for private lessons so that they are competent enough behind the wheel to handle the hectic and chaotic traffic here. There is also a ridiculous amount of tax being put on cars here, so most young people can’t afford them and choose to ride motorcycles to travel in their daily lives instead. Considering those reasons, it is completely understandable why young people aren’t enthusiastic about learning to drive.
- Thrilled/Enthusiastic (adj): hào hứng
- Prospect (n): khả năng
- Hectic/Chaotic (adj): hỗn loạn
What are the differences between driving in the countryside and driving in the city?
I think they can both be quite dangerous, but for different reasons. There is a lot of traffic in urban areas, so unexpected circumstances can happen often, which is a great strain on the drivers’ attention. A person driving the car parallel to you can decide on a whim that they want to change lanes and cut you off, which forces you to react at an impeccably fast pace to stop a collision from happening. On the other hand, the roads in the countryside may be less crowded, but the drivers may bank on that fact to drive faster and more recklessly. If the accidents were to happen in these scenarios, it would be much more dangerous for the people involved.
- To be a great strain on someone’s attention (collocation): bắt ai đó tập trung tột độ
- On a whim (idiom): quyết định bất chợt
- Change lanes (verb phrase): chuyển làn đường
- Cut someone off (verb phrase): tạt đầu xe ai đó
- Impeccably (adv): một cách gần như hoàn hảo
- Recklessly (adv): một cách liều lĩnh
- Scenario (n): viễn cảnh
Do you consider most drivers where you live to be good drivers?
Umm, it kind of depends on your definition of a “good driver”. I think most drivers are capable of handling their vehicles well, in fact maybe a little too well. Something I have realized is that the more experience a driver has, the more that driver would try to pull off a stunt such as maneuvering in and out of traffic just to get a few seconds ahead of everyone else. They pretty much perform those idiotic acts and risk the lives of people around them just because they can get away with them. So I guess my answer is no, I would not consider them to be “good drivers”.
- Capable (adj): có khả năng
- Handle (v): điều khiển
- Pull off a stunt (idiom): làm một trò mạo hiểm và ngu ngốc
- Maneuver (v): di chuyển
- Idiotic (adj): ngu ngốc
- Act (n): hành động
- Get away with (phrasal verb): thoát tội
Chủ đề: Electric cars
How popular are electric cars in your country?
It is not uncommon to see electric cars here because we have a famous electric car manufacturer which is Vinfast. The company built a ride hailing service using only electric vehicles, so there is one electric car on every major road if I have to give an estimate. With that being said, the consumers don’t have much faith in these cars due to their lackluster performance. They are also riddled with errors so I don’t think electric cars will be extremely popular, at least not for the next few years.
- Give an estimate (verb phrase): cho một con số ước lượng
- Lackluster (adj): kém
- Be riddled with (idiom): đầy lỗi sai
In what ways could more people be persuaded to buy electric cars?
The most common complaint that I see opponents of electric cars make is that the process of charging such vehicles is way too complicated and lengthy. Stopping at a gas station and filling up the tank is much more effortless compared with having to find an electric charging station and wait hours to charge your car. If the electric car manufacturers could somehow find a way to solve that issue, it would probably turn people’s heads. It could be done by establishing more charging stations where drivers can instantly replace the battery in their cars free of charge instead of charging them.
- Complaint (n): lời phàn nàn
- Opponent (n): người phản đối
- Gas station (noun phrase): trạm xăng
- Fill up the tank (verb phrase): bơm xăng
- Effortless (adj): không mất nhiều công sức
- Turn someone’s head: thu hút sự chú ý của ai đó
- Free of charge (collocation): miễn phí
Do you think all cars will be electric one day?
I certainly hope so. The whole point of electric cars is to provide an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional ones, but it will not work unless most, if not all, people use electric vehicles. People have been more aware of this fact, so I have high hopes that they would finally take the leap and switch to electric cars. It might take a couple more decades to finalize the transition, but I think we will get there in due time.
- Alternative (n): phương án thay thế
- Conventional (adj): truyền thống
- Have high hopes (verb phrase): có nhiều hy vọng
- Take the leap (verb phrase): làm gì đó mạo hiểm
- Finalize (v): hoàn thành
- In due time (idiom): ở một thời điểm phù hợp
