IELTS Speaking Part 3 Test 01 Cambridge 19

Chủ đề: School rules

What kinds of rules are common in a school?

There are two types of regulations that can be present at every school. The first set of rules is to ensure the safety of the students, which may include rules such as not allowing students to climb school fences or running on the stairs. Children and teenagers are naturally impulsive and they are not completely aware of how dangerous those activities can be, so it is crucial to enforce those rules to a tee. In addition, rules that maintain respect in the classroom are also quite commonplace. Students are expected to behave and speak in a respectful way to their teachers and other staff, which can teach them to be polite and well-mannered.

  • Impulsive (adj): bốc đồng
  • To a tee (idiom): thực hiện một cách hoàn hảo
  • Commonplace (adj): bình thường

How important is it to have rules in a school?

In my opinion, it depends on the type of rules. For rules that are established to build a safe and positive learning environment, such as the ones I mentioned before, they should definitely be kept in every school. An abandonment of those rules would introduce a lot of negativity in schools and enable students to behave rashly. However, the regulations that solely exist to control students and limit their freedom of expression need to be removed. There are many schools which prohibit their students from dyeing their hair or expressing their personality through outfits. I believe that these actions in no way affect the students’ ability to study or how they behave, so it is unnecessary to have those rules.

  • Abandonment (n): sự bác bỏ
  • Rashly (adj): thiếu suy nghĩ
  • Freedom of expression (noun phrase): sự tự do thể hiện

What do you recommend should happen if children break school rules?

First of all, I am strictly against corporal punishment. I think that in no circumstances should that kind of measure be condoned as a way of disciplining children. A better course of action would be to increase the amount of schoolwork that the offenders have to do. Not only will they learn not to break the rules again but they will also gain knowledge from doing extra tasks. Another effective solution is having the students who broke the rules a timeout or detention period. Even if the students themselves haven’t quite understood the gravity of their actions yet, they may still avoid making the same mistake again.

  • Corporal punishment (noun phrase): hình phạt thể chất
  • Condone (v): dung túng
  • Discipline (v): Kỷ luật
  • Offender (n): người phạm tội
  • Gravity of one’s action (idiom): tầm quan trọng của hành động

Can you suggest why many students decide to study law at university?

I believe that the main reason why law is a popular major and profession is the influence of movies and TV shows about law. In most cases, these pieces of media would portray lawyers, judges and other law-related jobs as prestigious and extremely lucrative career paths, which makes impressionable teenagers choose to study law when they enroll in university.

  • Piece of media (collocation): phương tiện truyền thông
  • Prestigious (adj): danh giá
  • Lucrative (adj): kiếm được nhiều tiền
  • Impressionable (adj): dễ bị ảnh hưởng

What are the key personal qualities needed to be a successful lawyer?

Against the general consensus, I personally don’t think that lawyers need to be smart to be successful. They are not required to memorize every law or give their clients consultancy on the spot, so they don’t really have to think on their feet. Having intelligence does of course help, but to me the most important traits that lawyers should have are patience and perseverance. It is an absolute must that lawyers have to shift through thousands of laws and precedents when researching a case to find a minute thing that applies to their case. Without having the ability to power through their tasks and not give up, I don’t see how anyone is supposed to be a good lawyer.

  • Consultancy (n): tư vấn
  • Think on one’s feet (idiom): ứng biến
  • Perseverance (n): sự bền bỉ
  • Precedent (n): tiền lệ
  • Minute (adj): rất nhỏ
  • Power through (phrasal verb): nỗ lực tiếp tục làm gì đó

Do you agree that working in the legal profession is very stressful?

Absolutely! Lawyers as well as paralegals have to be responsible for extremely important clients. For law firms representing businesses, making a single mistake can lead to their clients losing millions of dollars or at risk of losing classified information. If they don’t want those scenarios to ever happen, they will have to work relentlessly to assure that their results are always perfect. In addition, lawyers who work in prosecuting or defending a potential criminal will have to worry about whether the accused person is actually guilty or not. They have to decide the fate of a human being, which I would argue to be even more important than a lump sum of money.

  • Paralegal (n): nhân viên pháp chế
  • Represent (v): đại diện
  • Classified (adj): được bảo mật
  • Scenario (n): viễn cảnh
  • Relentlessly (adv): không ngừng nghỉ
  • Prosecute (v): khởi tố
  • Defend (v): biện hộ
  • Accused (adj): bị tố cáo
